HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering Co. (HD KSOE) has announced the successful delivery of its pioneering vessel, capable of undertaking extended journeys without requiring Engineers. The vessel was handed over to the Korea's H-Line Shipping. The ship achieves this feat through AI-enabled machinery monitoring and advanced safety systems.

The innovative ship is a 180,000 dwt LNG-powered bulker, outfitted with HD Hyundai's cutting-edge solutions: the Integrated Condition Diagnosis Solution (HiCBM) and the Integrated Safety Control Solution (HiCAMS). These seamlessly integrated systems diagnose any faults in the ship's equipment in real time and recognize emergencies such as fires on board the vessel autonomously. Validation of both of these systems has been conducted by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

At the core of this vessel's functionality, the HiCBM system oversees central components such as the main engines, auxiliary engines, pumps, and compressors. The HiCBM system identifies indicators and predicts potential failures preemptively using AI. On the other hand, the HiCAMS system, leveraging CCTV cameras and AI, ensures a real-time view of safety-related situations.

Many competing companies have trialed autonomous navigation systems in hopes of overcoming the challenge of autonomous and unmanned shipping. However, for longer voyages, equipment maintenance and emergency-response functions of Human crew have yet to be replaced. HD KSOE's system, although not entirely unmanned, represents a significant stride in that direction.
